Got my Girls Night tickets!

Check it out! As you can see, I got my tickets to one of Ottawa’s most anticipated shows, Girls Night: The Musical.  The show starts next week with a big opening night on February 18 and runs until February 21 at Centrepointe Theatre. So that gives you plenty of time to get tickets of your own and check it out.

I want to give a big thanks Bronwyn at Cinnamon Toast New Media and the wonderful people at Girls Night The Musical for this opportunity. Since it is my year in Ottawa and my list of cultural and entertaining things that I’ve done so far is limited to late-night poutine in Vanier, I felt the need to branch out. This show certainly fits the bill.

So… I have my tickets. Do you have yours yet?

Deck my halls

Next time you watch National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and there’s a scene where Chevy Chase gets electrocuted by Christmas lights or falls off a ladder putting up decorations, be sure to laugh.  Because you know what? That stuff is only funny when it happens in the movies.  Trust me, I know.

Inspired by the need to somehow match my Halloween decorations, I had grand plans for my house when Christmas rolled ’round this year.  But traveling, the fear of decorating too early, bad weather and logistics got in the way.

So this is what I was stuck with.

Not nearly as good as I wanted them to be, especially compared to some folks on nearby streets who must sit around waiting for the winter months so they can decorate and really show off. (For a great photo gallery of some houses around Ottawa that have really nice decorations, check out Indiscriminate Thoughts where A has taken some nice photos.)

And falling off the ladder, breaking a giant wreath (not intentionally) and having to re-wire things three times — not to mention leave countless holes in the side of my house — only added to the disappointment when I stood back and took a look at my handy work.

But at least my decorations are up.

Montreal Canadiens are Canada’s team?

I noticed an interesting post over on Dennis-Kane.com where he made mention of a recent survey taken by the Ipso-Reid research company, where one third of people surveyed felt that the Montreal Canadiens — winners of 24 Stanley Cups and ‘local team’ to my hometown, Montreal — are in fact Canada’s hockey team.

Gotta say that was nice to read.

But then the report goes on to say that 25 percent of people surveyed felt that the Toronto Maple Leafs are Canada’s team.

I guess there’s no accounting for taste.  I tried being a Leafs fan for seven years and it didn’t work.  Not that I ever dropped my alliance to Montreal, but I tried to support the local team of where I was living, just in case they did win something.

That never happened.

And now as I make my way back towards “Leafs Nation” for a several days, the feeling of “what was I thinking?” comes over me.

Elgin Street header returns!

After many play-dates in the virtual sandbox, I finally settled on a header I like.  (This isn’t really breaking or important news, but I hadn’t written anything for a while, so this is what you get.)

And as luck would have it, the banner header I chose is my old Elgin Street header!  (The one I used from before the site make over.)I find that while Ottawa has some great architecture and thanks to Parliament, a distinctive look, there aren’t that many great shots of the city’s skyline.

Namely because of the lay of the land.  It’s hard to get a good shot of the city from a vantage point where you can capture everything. Most of those shots are taken from Gatineau and even then, it’s difficult.

Either way, for now the Eglin Street header is back.  Now you can all sleep better at night knowing this.

Follow Me on Twitter

twitter-logoNow I’ve decided to join the masses who utter the famous plea “Follow me on Twitter!”

In case it was keeping you awake at night, you can now get your dose of Capital City: Moving to Ottawa in between posts (which if you’re a follower of this blog, you know can go for weeks at a time) by following me on Twitter. And if you’re 1) interesting 2) live in Ottawa 3) female and own a denim, leather or satin skirt or 4) are just someone who has something fun to say, there’s a good chance I’ll follow you back. (Really, you don’t have to live in Ottawa, but the whole female/skirt thing will sure score you bonus points.)

I’ll have to get around to adding a widget or graphic or something on the sidebar one of these days, but WordPress doesn’t always play nice with HTML. And I’m hardly a master of it.

Nevertheless, FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER!

john pinette show rocked

Just figured I would mention that the John Pinette show at the Winter Garden Theater last Friday was awesome.  John worked a full one hour set, and took the time to meet everyone after the show, signing autographs and posing for pictures.

Honestly, for a man of his size, it’s truly amazing to see how much energy he has – especially for his fans.  Because even when the show was over, he still was “on” – making jokes and talking with the audience. Not only was he a professional on stage, entertaining and amusing, but off stage as well.  I really can’t say enough good things about him.

I’m not sure what the format will be for his shows in Ottawa this weekend at the National Arts Centre, but if you get the chance, you really should check it out.

Submitted for your approval, a photo of John Pinette and myself at the Winter Garden Theater.  (I’m the on the left, just in case there was any confusion.)

back in toronto… for now…

Like all good things in life, my vacation in Montreal came to an end. Now of course the reality of the new year is setting in and something strange has happened.  I have suddenly become very unmotivated with The Company and the work I do with them.

But wait! (dramatic pause) Isn’t The Company not only the folks I spun a wonderful tale to in order to get two weeks off, but also my ticket to Ottawa?  Yes… which as you can imagine will present a small problem if I want to be transferred and for some reason I decided to quit before it happens.  Or is it a problem at all?  Could there be another way of getting to Ottawa?

I guess you’ll just have to stay tuned to find out what I do.
